Authorities in New Jersey are continuing to investigate a fatal boating accident off the coast of Long Beach Island (LBI) that claimed one life and left another person injured after both were reportedly thrown from a boat in rough water conditions.
According to preliminary information from the New Jersey State Police and local marine officials, the incident occurred near the Barnegat Bay and Intracoastal Waterway area, a popular destination for recreational boating. Investigators say the vessel encountered a significant wake while traveling offshore, causing the two occupants to be ejected into the water.
Officials reported that after the pair fell overboard, the unmanned boat continued moving and ultimately struck one of the victims. Emergency crews, along with nearby boaters, responded quickly following distress calls from the scene. One individual was rescued and taken for medical treatment, while the second victim tragically died as a result of the incident.
Authorities have not yet publicly identified those involved as notifications to family members are still pending. Early reports indicate the surviving victim is expected to recover, although details regarding their injuries have not been fully disclosed.
The investigation is being led by the New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau in coordination with local agencies and the U.S. Coast Guard. Investigators are examining several factors, including whether life jackets and engine cutoff safety devices were being properly used at the time of the crash.
Safety officials note that boating accidents in busy coastal areas can often involve rough wakes, excessive speed, operator inattention, or equipment-related issues, particularly during periods of increased water traffic.
Authorities are reminding boaters to prioritize safety, operate vessels responsibly, and ensure all protective equipment is functioning properly before heading onto the water.
The incident remains under active investigation.
