Family, friends, and members of the Colorado community are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Nickolay Jogolev, who died after suffering a medical emergency while hiking the Manitou Incline near Colorado Springs over Memorial Day weekend. He was 48 years old.
According to the El Paso County Coroner’s Office, Jogolev collapsed Saturday morning while climbing the iconic and physically demanding trail west of Colorado Springs. Officials with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said he began experiencing breathing problems about halfway through the hike before collapsing on the incline.
Hikers nearby immediately rushed to help and provided first aid until search and rescue teams arrived at the scene. Jogolev was transported to a hospital for emergency medical treatment but later died. Authorities have not yet publicly released his official cause of death.
The Manitou Incline, known for its steep ascent and challenging terrain, was temporarily closed for approximately two hours while emergency crews responded to the incident. Officials continue reminding hikers to properly prepare for the strenuous climb and carefully assess their physical condition before attempting the trail.
Nickolay Jogolev is being remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, and hardworking provider. A GoFundMe created in support of his family revealed that he was the father of seven children, several of whom require specialized medical and daily care. His wife, Coral Jogolev, described him as a stable and grounded presence with a quiet sense of humor and a deep love of learning, particularly studying Latin.
Loved ones say his passing has left an unimaginable void within the family. As the sole financial provider for the household, his sudden death has also created significant uncertainty for those he cared for most deeply.
Tributes continue pouring in from friends, neighbors, and community members who are offering condolences and support during this devastating time.
