The northern Idaho community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Josh Pilch, 48, and Coy Jensen, 18, who died in a tragic head-on collision on US-95 near Sagle on Memorial Day. Their sudden deaths have left family members, friends, classmates, and church communities grieving the loss of two deeply loved individuals whose lives touched many people.
According to Idaho State Police, the crash occurred Monday afternoon south of Sagle near Sandpoint. Authorities reported that a red 2011 Buick LaCrosse driven by Coy Jensen crossed the center line and collided head-on with a northbound Dodge Ram 2500. Both Jensen and his stepfather, Josh Pilch, died at the scene. Two occupants of the Dodge Ram were transported to local hospitals, including one person airlifted for medical treatment.
The tragedy came just days before Coy’s planned graduation from Sandpoint High School, where he was expected to graduate with high honors. Family friends said he had also been preparing for a two-year mission to Santiago, Chile, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints later this summer.
Friends remembered Coy as a compassionate and joyful young man who made others feel welcomed and valued. He was active in school, church, and athletics, including the Sandpoint High swim team, and had recently been recognized as Student of the Month. Loved ones described him as someone whose contagious laugh, warm hugs, and caring spirit left a lasting impression on everyone around him.
Josh Pilch is also being remembered as a devoted father and family man who helped raise a close-knit and loving household. Friends said both Josh and Coy embodied kindness, generosity, and service to others.
As the community mourns, tributes continue pouring in honoring two lives that ended far too soon but left unforgettable memories in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.
