Authorities searching for missing 11-year-old Joshua Lahai at Surfside Beach have recovered a pair of shorts believed to belong to the child as search operations continue along the shoreline and surrounding waters.

Officials say Joshua disappeared Sunday evening at approximately 5 p.m. after reportedly being swept underwater by a powerful wave while he was about 150 yards offshore with another child. Authorities confirmed the second child was able to safely return to shore.

Following the discovery of clothing believed connected to Joshua, the operation has shifted from an active rescue mission to a recovery effort. Multiple agencies remain involved in the extensive search, including Surfside Police Department, the United States Coast Guard, and Texas EquuSearch.

Emergency crews continue using helicopters, boats, aircraft, drones, and shoreline patrols in an effort to locate the missing boy. Authorities say search teams are carefully monitoring both the water and nearby coastal areas as conditions allow.

Joshua was reportedly visiting Surfside Beach with a little league football team from Richmond along with family members and friends when the tragic incident occurred. News of his disappearance has deeply affected both the local community and those connected to the youth football organization.

Community members have continued sharing prayers, messages of hope, and support for Joshua’s loved ones as search crews remain on scene. The heartbreaking situation has also served as a reminder of the dangers strong surf and sudden waves can present along coastal waters.

Authorities are urging beachgoers to exercise caution in the area and follow all safety advisories while the search operation remains active.

Further updates are expected as officials continue recovery efforts and gather additional information.
