Lieutenant Dennis Casey Jr., a 24-year veteran of the East Bank Consolidated Fire Department, died Friday night following a personal watercraft accident near the Chef Pass Bridge in New Orleans, according to authorities and department officials. He was remembered by fellow firefighters, friends, and loved ones as a devoted public servant, respected colleague, and dedicated family man.
New Orleans EMS said crews responded to the scene around 8:30 p.m., where Casey was pronounced dead. Authorities described the incident as a tragic accident, and officials said the circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
Casey spent more than two decades serving Jefferson Parish through the East Bank Consolidated Fire Department, where he earned the respect of fellow firefighters for his leadership, commitment, and strong sense of duty. Department officials said he exemplified the values of trust, dedication, service, and family throughout his distinguished career.
Firefighters who worked alongside Casey said he formed deep bonds within the department and was especially known for his search-and-rescue training and willingness to help others. Friends described him as someone who took immense pride in his work while remaining deeply devoted to his family.
Ernest Porsche, a longtime friend and fire captain, said both men grew up dreaming of joining the Jefferson Parish Fire Department, following in the footsteps of their fathers, who also served as firefighters.
Others remembered Casey as a compassionate person whose commitment to helping people extended beyond his job. Friends said service to others was central to who he was, both inside and outside the firehouse.
Casey is survived by his wife and three children — Michael, Catherine, and Emma.
The East Bank Consolidated Fire Department said the loss has deeply affected the entire fire family, with colleagues and loved ones now focused on honoring Casey’s legacy of courage, dedication, and selfless service to the community he faithfully served for 24 years.
