The East Texas community is mourning the tragic loss of Tiffany Rutland, a 49-year-old resident of Alto, Texas, who died Monday morning following a devastating single-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 59 near Lufkin.
According to the Lufkin Police Department, emergency crews responded around 9 a.m. on May 25, 2026, to the northbound lanes of U.S. 59 near the Pentecostal campground south of the city. Preliminary reports indicate Rutland was driving a dark blue 2018 Ford Explorer northbound when, for reasons still under investigation, the SUV veered off the roadway, struck a culvert, and rolled multiple times before coming to rest upside down approximately 50 feet from the highway.
First responders from the Lufkin Fire Department, Angelina County EMS, and the Lufkin Police Department arrived within minutes, but Rutland suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two additional passengers inside the vehicle survived the crash but sustained serious injuries. Authorities said both individuals were airlifted to regional hospitals for emergency medical treatment. Their identities and current conditions have not yet been publicly released.
Witnesses described a chaotic and heartbreaking scene as the SUV lost control and crashed off the highway. Investigators continue working to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
Police said multiple factors are being examined, including the possibility of mechanical failure, road conditions, distraction, impairment, or a medical emergency. The vehicle has been impounded for further forensic analysis, and toxicology testing is pending as part of the standard fatal crash investigation.
Rutland’s death has left family members, friends, and the Alto community grieving the sudden loss of someone remembered as caring and deeply connected to those around her.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains active and additional details will be released as they become available. Meanwhile, loved ones continue to mourn a life tragically cut short on a stretch of highway that turned deadly in an instant.
