A tragic high-speed police pursuit in Fulton County, Georgia, ended in heartbreak Monday afternoon when an innocent bystander, identified as 51-year-old Chatanna Ohiyesha Patterson, was killed after a fleeing vehicle crashed into a gas station parking lot.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the incident began around 2:40 p.m. on Interstate 20 westbound when a trooper attempted to stop a Hyundai Elantra for speeding. Authorities reported the vehicle was traveling approximately 90 mph in a 55 mph zone before the driver, identified as 26-year-old Fre’shun Tyai White of Marietta, allegedly fled the traffic stop.
Investigators say White drove recklessly across multiple lanes of traffic, exited and re-entered the interstate, and nearly caused several collisions while attempting to evade law enforcement. Due to safety concerns, the original trooper ended the direct pursuit, though another nearby trooper later observed the dangerous driving and attempted to locate the vehicle.
Before officers could intervene, White reportedly exited onto the Hill Street ramp at a high speed, lost control of the Hyundai Elantra, crossed Hill Street, and crashed into a nearby gas station parking lot.
The out-of-control vehicle struck a parked car beside which Chatanna Ohiyesha Patterson was standing. She suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities described her as an innocent victim caught in the devastating aftermath of the reckless pursuit.
White, a passenger in his vehicle, and the driver of the parked car all sustained serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Officials have not yet released updates regarding their conditions.
Fre’shun Tyai White has since been taken into custody and now faces multiple charges, including first-degree vehicular homicide and serious injury by vehicle, along with additional related offenses.
The Georgia State Patrol extended condolences to Patterson’s family and emphasized that the tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the dangers associated with fleeing law enforcement and reckless high-speed driving.
